The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) is a private diplomacy organisation founded on the principles of humanity, impartiality and independence. Its mission is to help prevent, mitigate, and resolve armed conflict through dialogue and mediation. HD is looking for a: Project Manager, Sudan and South Sudan Start date: 1 November 2015 Reporting to the Africa Regional Director and based in Nairobi, the successful candidate will oversee HD’s work in Sudan and South Sudan.
In particular, s/he will:
• Develop the overall strategy and direction of the projects in consultation with the Africa Regional Director, and implement project activities;
• Liaise regularly with key interlocutors in both countries and in the region;
• Establish and maintain contacts with government and opposition group representatives in relevant geographical areas;
• Oversee the production of project proposals and other fundraising materials, and monitor budgets for the Sudan and South Sudan projects;
• Plan and organise workshops, trainings and other events;
• Contribute to other lines of work (for example, Mediation Support and Oslo Forum) when and as needed;
• Represent HD in different contexts on the continent, including with senior government and institutional officials and donors as needed;
• Supervise project-related staff and consultants and liaise with the Office Administration and Accounting Manager, the Regional Director, and the HR Manager in Geneva, on personnel issues.
• Any other tasks as requested by the supervisor.
Required qualifications:
The ideal candidate should hold a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution/Political Science/Development Studies or a related field. In addition, s/he should have:
• An in-depth knowledge of African affairs and significant professional experience in Sudan and South Sudan;
• Extensive knowledge of, or experience in, international peace and security issues, the United Nations, the African Union, and conflict mediation;
• 7 to 15 years work experience in an international environment, with an emphasis on the Horn of Africa and Sudan/South Sudan;
• Experience in project management and development of new projects as well as fundraising;
• Experience in building and managing networks and preparing high-level gatherings;
• Experience managing, and working as part of, a team of staff in a project setting;
• Experience in political analysis in the area of conflict resolution (would be considered an asset);
In addition, the successful applicant should:
• Be proactive and highly-motivated, with a strong sense of initiative and creativity;
• Have the capacity to plan and manage several projects simultaneously and independently in a fast-paced environment, keeping a keen attention to details;
• Show flexibility and resourcefulness in finding solutions to unexpected problems as well as an ability to work well under pressure; possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
• Have a good judgment and be discrete in handling sensitive information;
• Have excellent diplomatic, interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work well with high-level personalities in sensitive environments and high stress situations;
• Have strong abilities to work in an inter-cultural environment, either independently or as part of a team.
