History of Automobiles

The asset which is being displayed as a status symbol and which every single love to have these days – an automobile, presently known as car or motor car is the easiest means of transport. From automobile to the car, the journey of automobile invention and history of automobiles have hidden a saga behind it. It seems quite difficult to give all the kudos to a Solo man because it did not get designed over night. The History of Automobile is filled with numerous names of brilliant and genius brains.

1) Early Era Automobiles History

• Steam Engined Automobile History

The idea of automobiles is said to be augmented during mid 1700’s. The first automobile which was Steam engined was invented in 1769 by ‘Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot’ Performing both the functions driving & steering by front wheel with caliber of 2.25 miles travel per hour with four passengers for 15 minutes. This was the first vehicle which French army used to pull their weapons. As it was steam engine it would rest to regain its power to cover the extra miles so after two attempts by army they declared it unstable. Cugnot released second version of steam automobile in 1771 after that in 19th century many creations came with four seats for passenger and four wheeler automobiles but some observer define Amédée Bollée’s automobile the real wagon invented in 1873, it was self-driven steam road wagon to transport passengers. Steam engine wagons continued developing but later on steam automobiles were replaced with Gasoline automobiles.

• Gasoline Automobile History (Internal Combustion Engine)

There is slight disagreement among people about automobile history and the first automobile. Few onlookers said gasoline-powered was the first automobile. During earlier periods of Internal Combustion Engine automobiles the invention could not get success due to lack of liquid fuels and inventors used gas mixtures instead of. ‘Francois Issac de Rivaz’ was the one who invented an engine in 1806, which was powered by the mixture of oxygen and hydrogen gas. Later on many engineers invented the versions of that and one of them was powered by Coal gas.

Around 1870 Siegfried Marcus filled liquid to the handcrafted engine which declared him the first man to drive a first gasoline automobile. The Car is known as ‘The first Marcus Car’ presently. This was redesigned between 1888-89 adding four seats in the model.

• Electric Automobile History

The Cugnot design gone through several changes from steam to Electric automobiles to internal combustion engines during Early era to Modern era automobiles.

With the development of gasoline automobiles, electric automobiles also grabbed the attention of people till early 20th century due to its compatible and easy to handle feature which was difficult to achieve in Gasoline automobiles. The first electric automobile car was invented by ‘Anyos Jedlik’ in 1828 but car invented by ‘Andreas Flocken’ in 1888 named Flocken Elekrowagon was regarded as first real electric Car.

• Petrol Engine Automobile History (Internal Combustion Engine)

Though the internal combustion Engine came in existence few years back but the original petrol powered engine automobile was introduced in 1886. ‘Gottlieb Daimler’ and ‘Karl Friedrich Benz’ are the two names who is said to be invented the automobile separately but submitted on 29th January, 1886. Most of the observer called Karl Benz the main inventor as he invented first gasoline powered automobile in 1885 named ‘Benz-Patent Motorwagen.’

As per automobile history ‘Karl Friendrich Benz’ drove his three wheeled automobile first in 1885, where Gottlieb Daimler was the first in world, invented the four wheeler high speed gasoline engine automobile. In 1893 Benz designed for vehicle for two passengers ‘Benz victoria’. The very same year Gottlieb Daimler invented the first motorcycle by fixing the reduced version of engine in a wooden made cycle. Ten years later in 1895 ‘Fredrick William Lanchester’ built first foul wheeled petrol propelled vehicle in Birmingham.

2) Veteran Era Automobile History

The production of automobiles started rapidly in Germany, US, France, western and Central Europe using the technologies of steam, internal combustion, electricity with fuels such as kerosene, coal oil and petrol etc. After the premier production of Karl Benz in 1888, Emile Roger and many other manufactured under Benz license. Eventually a company ‘Panhard et Levassor’ in France was formed to manufacture automobile and presented four cylinder engine. In 1893 Frank Duryea and Charles established first American manufacturing Company in US named ‘Duryea Motor Wagon Company’ but Ransom E. Olds and his company Olds Motor Vehicle is the leading name of automobile in this era. Through all over this era few common problems came into surface like breakdowns, unavailability of fuels, proper roads for driving were rare and due to constant inventions a year old car lost its charisma.

The models invented in the veteran era automobile history were Roper Stream car(1863), Colombia Electric Landaulet ( 1899), De dion Bouton(1901), Leon Bolle (1896), Roper Steam cycle (1894), De Dion Tricycle (1887), Salvesen Steam (1896), Automoto De Dion (1899), Virot Steam Carriage (1887), De Dion Bouton Steam Quadricycle (1890), Riker Electric (1900), Hurtu (1899), Success Model B Runabout (1907), Columbia (1901), Toledo Steam (1902).

3) Brass/Edwardian Era Automobile History

The Brass era contains models which were manufactured between later part of 1905 -1914. During this era the development of automobile was very rapid because of competition among small scale manufacturers. The famous models invented in brass era history of automobile were Ford Model T, Morgan Runabout, Mercer Raceabout and Bugatti type 13.

4) Vintage Era Automobile History

This era begin from 1919. During vintage period the closed body and front engine automobile came to existence with standardized controls. Some new feature like tapered glass, hydraulic brakes also launched with internal combustion engine added multi valve, overhead camshaft, and V8/12/16 engines. The automobile history of vintage era contains famous models – Austin-7, Lancia Lambada, Bugatti Type 35, Hanomag 2, Ford Model A, Cadillac V-16.

5) Pre World War II Era Automobile History

This era was filled with economic, financial recession and great disappointments but around 1946 it brought recovery from world and in the automobile history this era introduced automobiles with fenders, headlights, running boards and trunk incorporated with totally covered body. By 1930 most of the modern technics were invented and some were incorporated later on. The popular models of this era were Alvis Speed 20, Ford V-8 Model B, Tatra 77, Bugatti Type 57, Citroen traction Avant, MG T series, Volkwogen Beetle, Rolls-Royce Phantom III.

6) Post War Era Automobile History

The famous model of this era were GAZ –M20 Pobeda, Standard Vanguard, Morris minor, Ford Mustang , Chevrolet Camaro, Datsun 240Z, Fiat 124 etc. This era brought revolutionary changes in the models. The artful and military designed models were launched with high speed. Japan was lead country in car manufactures and mass production were taking place in other countries like East Europe and New Asia.

7) Modern Era Automobiles History

This era began back 25 years, presented cars with computerized design, standardization, diesel engine, the external body and design has also changed according to the compatibility. All the recent passenger cars have front wheel drive. The modern automobiles display three types in the market – sedan, sport & hatchback utility vehicle. In the modern era China is leading the production of car manufacture in the world ever since 2009.Several competition have been also organized since late 20th century like North American Car of the Year, International Car of the year, World Car of the year & Car of Century. The popular models are Toyota corolla, Honda Accord, Tata Nano, Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet volt, BMW 3 etc.
